How to Handle Natural Disasters

06.30.2025

When the weather turns rough, it’s the prep work and quick thinking that keep everything safe and running. Whether you're managing properties or leading a service team, these five tips will help you stay ahead of the event.

Before the Event

1. Know Your Site, Make a Plan

Every property comes with different risks. Walk each location and take note of things like low spots, loose signage, or exposed equipment. Create a plan around what you find, and make sure your crew knows their roles and how to stay in touch.

2. Get Supplies and Secure the Area

Top off emergency kits with flashlights, batteries, first aid, snacks, and water. Tie down or store loose items, clean out drains and gutters, and check that generators or backups are ready to go. The smallest prep step can prevent major damage.

3. Keep Communication Flowing

Use weather alerts and live updates to stay informed. Check in with your team often and make sure everyone is safe. If sheltering in place, follow the plan and stay put.

After the Event

4. Safety Comes First

Only return when local officials say it’s safe. Once back, inspect the site for things like gas leaks, water damage, or structural issues. Take photos and document anything that needs attention.

5. Focus on Recovery and Support

Start repairs, set up temporary fixes if needed, and keep property owners and teams informed. Don’t forget to check in with your crew too. Helping people get back on track is just as important as fixing what’s broken.

Storms may be unpredictable, but your plan doesn’t have to be. The more prepared your team is, the faster you can recover and protect what matters.
